Today's Podcast is the digitalization of a cassette tape I made on July 20, 1969, when I originally captured the TV audio of the Apollo Moon Landing on the Moon. The 36-year old tape is still in pretty good shape, although some parts of the audio are muddled and a few other extraneous sounds were captured during the recording.

The historic Moon Walking segment starts just as Neil Armstrong is heading down the ladder of the LEM, before he stepped on the Moon. It ends about an hour later after the time when President Richard Nixon called the astronauts (Neil and Buzz Aldrin) standing outside the LEM by phone from the Oval Office in the White House.

I remember when Alan Shepard was the first American in space, playing the broadcast on my 8-transistor radio during my fifth grade school class. I remember President John Kennedy's speech about sending men to the Moon and back by the end of 1969. In the middle 1980's I met in-person three astronauts that traveled to the Moon: Gene Cernan; Jim Lovell, and Alan Bean.

To celebrate the 36th Anniversary of that historic event, I point you to my digital art image, Apollo Moon and my Desktop High-Resolution images of the same.

Duration of this PodCast is 1 hour 3 minutes and 53 seconds with a size of 34.4 MB. Sampled at 44.1kHz and variable-rate encoded between 64 and 128 kilobits.

Today's Podcast is an interview with my friend, Jennifer Hillman-Helgren, Ph.D. We discussed her recent dissertation and opinions involving same. Below is her Abstract of Dissertation:

Inventing American Girlhood: Gender and Citizenship in the Twentieth-Century Camp Fire Girls

by

Jennifer Hillman Helgren

Claremont Graduate University: 2005

In 1910, a group of progressive reformers began to plan and create a national organization for adolescent girls. The Camp Fire Girls, the most popular girls' organization in the United States in the 1910s and 1920s, provided a unique, feminine corollary to the recently formed Boy Scouts. This dissertation has a two-fold purpose. First, it examines, through Camp Fire publications such as handbooks and magazines, the models of girlhood and womanhood Camp Fire promoted. Secondly, it analyzes girls' scrapbooks, diaries, and other personal reminiscences to better understand the formation of girls' cultures in response to the Camp Fire program.

In their vision of girl citizenship, early twentieth-century Camp Fire officials struggled to uphold the nineteenth-century concept of a female sphere of nurture, domesticity, and service to family while they expanded opportunities for girls in education, careers, outdoor activities, and civic reform. Camp Fire taught girls through a maternalist philosophy that regarded traditional feminine characteristics as inherent and the basis for female contributions to family, community, and nation. I contend that Camp Fire's leadership found in maternalism an adaptable model of girl citizenship that could be applied to changing American social and political concerns through the mid-twentieth century.

Thematic chapters examine Camp Fire's founding philosophy, its early efforts to grapple with modernity through the use of Indian imagery, its claims to serve all girls through an inclusive organization, its militarization of American girlhood through war work during World War I and II, and its sponsorship of homemaking as the basis for global citizenship in the conservative post-World War II era. The study ends with Camp Fire's decision to become co-educational in the early 1970s. For their part, many girls adopted the Camp Fire language and activities. Others created their own, often ambivalent, meaning and identity through the mixture of traditional and forward-looking roles Camp Fire offered. Importantly, Camp Fire provided a space for the formation of girl friendships, activities, and shared values on both local and national levels.

Today's PodCast is the live interview with Gene Weed at his iFXFilms Studio located in Cottonwood, Arizona. The interview was conducted on April 27th during my visit there.

We discussed using the proper kinds of audio equipment in making podcasts sound more professional using the proper kind of microphone, the understanding of the recording media, and the use of post-production digital filters.

We created a sample file to demonstrate some of the post-production filters on an audio file. The samples clearly show for example, how the sound can be enhanced without the need to increase the loudness using the Compressor filter.

Both Gene and I are interested in receiving feedback from the listeners. We want to know if there's interest among you to create a short lesson series of using post-production audio tools to make your podcasts sound more like radio quality broadcasts to improve your listener's experience. Feel free to email Gene Weed directly, if you have specific technical questions regarding post-audio production.

Duration of this PodCast is 27 minutes and 18 seconds with a size of 3.1 MB.

This PodCast is my commentary about two topics: 1) My high school friend, Bob "Pops" Springer's picture (shown below) from the 1954 RAND Corporation on what their idea of a 2004 home computer would look like; and 2) A revisitation to my November 19th PodCast in connection with my December 15th Competent Toastmaster (CTM) and Competent Leader (CL) Toastmaster awards from my Twin Oaks Toastmasters Club.

"Scientists from the RAND Corporation have created this model to illustrate how a "home computer" could look like in the year 2004. However the needed technology will not be economically feasible for the average home. Also the scientists readily admit that the computer will require not yet invented technology to actually work, but 50 years from now scientific progress is expected to solve those problems. With teletype interface and the Fortran language, the computer will be easy to use."
